A few facts about heavy vehicle safety ladders.
In January 2006, "THE WORKING AT HEIGHT REGULATIONS" were revised. From that date, "THE WORKING AT HEIGHT REGULATIONS" extend outside of the work place and now include heavy vehicle, WHERE EVER THEY ARE.
To date, we have NOT seen any legislation that specifically states that EVERY heavy vehicle MUST carry a safe, suitable and approved ladder to allow safe passage for drivers and operators, on and off the vehicle bed.
HOWEVER, what is abundantly clear, is that if a fall occurred and injury, or even death was the result, a compensation claim would quickly raise it’s head and negligence on the behalf of the owner of the vehicle would be sited as the cause of the accident.
THE FIRST QUESTION any barrister would ask when in court would be, “did the owners / operators of the vehicle, provide a save and secure means for the driver, or operator to get on and off the back of the vehicle.” If the answer is NO, they didn’t provide a safe means for the driver to get on and off the back of the vehicle, they would have NO DEFENCE and would surely be prosecuted and made to pay substantial compensation.
Providing your drivers and operators with a Safety-Mate ladder, designed specifically for heavy vehicles, is not only a sound insurance policy against such claims, but it signals a safety culture that most responsible companies strive to achieve.
